Simply keeping an eye out for individuals that appear to be shady or mysterious is a great way to protect yourself.  If you were on land, it is likely that you would avoid individuals that make you feel uncomfortable.  The same should apply aboard a cruise ship.  

Try not to travel around the ship by yourself too much – if you must travel alone, tell people where you are going, and how long you expect to be gone.  That way, if you are late returning to your cabin, or to the restaurant, etc, people will realize that something is wrong, and go looking for you.
