Cruise Adventures in Alaska

Alaska is one of the most popular cruise destinations at the moment.  This may seem surprising, as it is hardly a sunny, tropical paradise with white beaches and palm trees.  Even so, Alaska is a beautiful place in its own way.  It has incredible scenery, with majestic glaciers and a huge variety of wildlife.  The people are friendly, and the companies offering cruises to Alaska offer you luxurious rooms, fine dining, and five star service.

Before you book your Alaska cruise, there are a few things that are worth considering, to make sure you truly do have a holiday of a lifetime.

When is The Best Time For an Alaska Cruise?

Taking Alaska cruises is a bit different than sailing to other destinations, because your window of opportunity is a bit more limited. Alaska cruises generally take place between the months of May to September. While July and August tend to be the most popular times to sail, May is the best time to view the wildflowers in bloom and September will give you a glorious glimpse at the fall foliage. You will get some beautiful scenery to enjoy during these months, but the weather patterns can be more unpredictable at these times. July and August will give you the best chance at the best weather to enjoy all of the outdoor activities available as well as time on deck when you are aboard your ship.

What To Do in Alaska

One of the most popular tourist attractions in Alaska is the Denali National Park.  The majority of cruise lines will offer plenty of time to take a land excursion to Denali – either through taking the train there, joining a wildlife trek, or staying in a lodge for a couple of days.  Once you have visited Denali, you may want to use the rest of your time to see some glaciers close up, take a fishing trip, or explore some native villages.

There are lots of educational excursions on offer in Alaska, that will let you learn about the environment and the local wildlife, or, you could visit some of the more tourist-centric towns for a while.

If you are considering a cruise, and have already done the Caribbean, or just want something a little different, then maybe you should consider Alaska as a unique and exciting summer destination.

I wasn't aware that there were Alaskan cruises until a year or two ago, but have since thought it would be quiet the adventure. Alaska is well known for it's natural beauty and wonder, but it's also cold… so you probably wouldn't have as many crowds to deal with than you would if you were going somewhere more exotic like the Caribbean. That's part of the appeal for me, to be honest. Being able to see the Northern Lights in person would just make the entire trip for me.

Alaskan cruises can be the most exciting vacation you have ever taken. It can also be a nightmare if it is not planned correctly. Something that everyone needs to take into consideration when cruising in Alaska is that it is cold. So make sure that you have the appropriate clothing or you will be inside you cabin for the whole cruise. You will need to make sure that you have long warm pants and shirts and a jacket as well. Many people make sure they take hats and scarfs as well. Remember that in order to see the sites you will have to be outside where there is ice which makes it cold.

My family and I have taken a Caribbean cruise but my husband and I have always wanted to take an Alaskan cruise - just the two of us. One thing I would do differently if we are ever to take an Alskan(or any other) cruise would be to sign up for more of the organized onshore trips. I normally don't care for tours I prefer instead to go exploring on my own. However, in the case of a cruise to somewhere you've never been consider the organized tours. Otherwise you can waste a lot of time 'exploring' on your own and not getting to see the things you are looking for.
